3 Books to Get You Writing I write a lot. At work I could be writing any number of things from radio scripts to ad copy to emails. I like to write in my personal life too, as evidenced by the piece that you’re reading. But sometimes, like any writer, I get writers block or get into a writing slump that causes me to be void of any original ideas. When that happens, I do one of three things: step away from the project completely to do  something else (if I’m at home, this means distracting myself with Netflix and YouTube videos), start writing anything and hope that worthy words will come out (I can always edit later), or turn to books to inspire me. Today I’ll talk about turning to books: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert Big Magic is like the Holstee manifesto for writers. After reading even a page or two of this book you’ll feel like a brilliant reincarnation of Virginia Woolf,  even if youre not. Elizabeth Gilbert gives you permission to, “bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you.” According to her, “if you’re alive, you’re a creative person. Slouching Toward Bethlehem by Joan Didion Of course I have to include Joan Didion, and I feel like this book is going to be on every list that I compile. This collection of essays is so good. The rarely sentimental Didion gets personal here in what I think are some of her best pieces. I really like, “On Keeping a Notebook and “On Self Respect.” Many of the articles in here are assignments from her editors at Vogue when she was a green writer. If Joan can write about something original on a topic that was assigned to her, you can too. On Writing Well by William Zinsser When I need help with some of the more technical aspects of writing, I turn to this book. Reading it makes me feel like I’m getting one-on-one guidance from a very knowledgeable and kind professor of an Ivy League University (this is actually who Zinsser is, or was RIP) who will buff away my imperfections and turn me into the professional, polished writer Ive always dreamed of being. Any piece of fiction If all else fails,  turn away from writing and return to your first loveâ€"pleasure reading. Yes, it may seem counterintuitive to be reading fiction when you should be writing, but trust me, it helps. To escape into Westeros and have a good cry over your favourite animal character’s death is sometimes the very thing you need to clear your head and nail that last line of an article you’ve been mulling over for days. Now, if you have to write at work like me and can’t pull out a book when you’re on the clock, make sure you take preemptive measures to feed your mind with the good stuff. What I like to do is take my lunch hour to read, whether that be a piece of fiction, some poetry, or a book about writing itself. Plus, I find the break in the day away from my screen is good headache and eye-strain prevention. The experiences of American life past and present are portrayed through the narrator’s, the invisible man, journey through life. The problems with society are foreshadowed by the racism and the symbols of the color white presented in the paint plant. â€Å"The Invisible Man† by Ralph Ellison depicts the African Americans struggle to be viewed as an equal member of society through the narrators struggles through life to discover his individuality or place in society while the white man or the community conspires to â€Å"keep the black man down†. The story follows the narrator through the various fights for equality and organizations that were supposed to be the voice of the people when in reality they became the figures that were dismantling the American dream for the very people they were trying to help. The struggles of black men are depicted through themes of racism and sexism, stereotypes, and the identity crisis for African Americans. A Major theme of this novel is the continued racism that the narrator experiences throughout his life. Racism is a plays the biggest role in shaping the narrators life experiences and ultimately turns him into an â€Å"invisible man†. In the first chapter the narrator’s grandfather said to him that African Americans lives is a war and that he is a traitor because his entire life he lived to the society’s ideals of the black man being a second class citizen (Ellison 110-111). Tyanne Rowe Museum Paper The Mihrab (prayer niche) dated 12th century, the point of origin being the city of Isfahan located in Iran is the object that captured my attention. This piece is considered to be a ceramic design made of â€Å"polychrome glazed cut tiles on a stone paste body that was later set into mortar†. Madrasa Imami is a school, in which this piece in was created 1354, later it was sold to Arthur U. Pope in 1931. When arriving at the museum I noticed that the items on display in the Islamic Art section were very utilitarian in nature. They were well-crafted beautifully designed tools. Arabic inscription a common theme through out all of the objects. There are many lines that create patterns that weave and interlock throughout the space that is not occupied by Arabic text creating symmetrical and geometrical shapes that add to the design. The lighting of the Mihrab was very flat, there were no spotlights directed on the prayer niche. The choice of lighting was good in that there was no need to highlight specific areas the design flowed evenly. There was enough to visualize throughout the piece. The form and function of the Mihrab is consistent to the traditional structure of many prayer niches during that time. There is nothing abstract or necessarily different about the way it was constructed other than the color and design used. This is simply a functional structure that held true for what it was used for which is the direction in which Muslims prayed towards, inside the mosque itself. For example, a person born to be a male may develop feminine body parts. When people are transgendered, they do not have any specific sex orientation. Later, it was made a general term to include all people with different gender behaviors. They include heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and other gender identification. Therefore, the explanation of this word is viewed to be flux but has to include two principal definitions. The first is it refers to people who feel their gender does not bring their true nature. The second is a person birth sex does not correspond with the common male or female functions. A transgender may have traits related to a certain gender or adapt those that are outside the ge nder continuum (Lombardi et al, 2001). Transgender identification consists of many categories, which some of them overlap. They are transvestite, androgynes, cross-dresser gender queer. In many cases, people who are cross- gendered are mainly transsexual. There is a group called transvestic fetishist is more considered more of a psychological issue than a transgender identity. It has been observed that it is complex to understand the types of transgender. This is because some of the characteristics of these categories are overlap. There are several effects associated with being transgendered. The first effect is trauma after realizing one is transgendered. No one would want to have gender abnormalities. This is why most people become traumatized because they least expect it. This is followed by emotions like anger anxiety, sadness, and self-denial among others. Others will feel hopeless and shameful about themselves. This leads to withdrawal and detachment from the society. These emotional effects could become severe if not treated. In severe cases, some people will suffer depression, which could result to suicide. Forty one percent of transgendered people in the United States are reported to have attempted suicide. In Seattle, twenty percent or more attempted suicide were recorded. The analysis also concluded that there is likely to be an increased rate of these cases (Dean et al, 2010). In some community setting transgendered, people are discriminated. They are seen to be abnormal with unacceptable character . This manly affects the homosexual community. All these effects are negative and affected people should seek medical help immediately. The first stage of treatment should be mental. If one is in a position to carry out physical treatment, they should go ahead and do so (American Public health, 2006). People or are transgendered face many challenges regarding their conditions. Most of them have to deal with internal conflicts about their exact identity. These are led to psychological uneasiness because some have found it hard to accept themselves. Mental health experts advise such people to seek medical help. The most recommended treatment for this problem is attending therapy. These therapies include talking to a specialist or will counsel individuals and assist them to get help. The patients are allowed to talk openly about what they feel and think in reference to their situation. In severe situations, transgender people can be diagnosed for gender dysphoria. This is a condition characterized with distress, and a person is unable to relate with others or work normally. Normally, the victim suffers depression, and this is why he or she becomes withdrawn (Chochran et al, 2002). Advanced medical studies have found solutions for persons who are transgendered. It is possible to correct some transgender conditions through medical surgery. For example, hormones can be used to change the biological development of a person. It is possible for a woman to develop breasts if she never had. Men with feminine parts can have removed and replaced with the appropriate ones. Physical treatment is most preferable because it will assist in mental recovery of those in conflict. When a woman is operated and can have a normal biological and physical development, she will be at peace with herself (American public Health Association, 2001). It will help people to understand it and find even better solutions for curbing it. The transgendered people should form association where they meet and learn more about their conditions. These associations will also help them to offer each other moral and emotional support.
